Cave Painting

In class we have been learning about cave paintings. We went on CC Search and found a picture that we liked. The cave men created this picture with red ochre, limestone and charcoal. The tools that they might of used could of been their fingers, a stick, animal hair or fur. They would of drawn this picture to tell a story to everyone and drew what they saw in there life time.

Writing Experience

Yesterday for Writing Experience we had to go on the internet and find a piece of art work we liked and put it on our blog. We searched and found the picture on CC Search.

I really like this piece of art work because the technique that they have used it make's it looks so realistic and amazing. I really think that it would of taken a long time to do this piece of art work because it is so big. I think the colours look great too.

Chunky Chalks

In class our teacher read us a story about how to make chalk. My favourite part was when we mixed all of the food colouring in with the mixture. It looked really cool.
Chunky Chalks

Question
What will happen when we mix Plaster of Paris with water?

Materials
Plaster of Paris, water, bowl, spoon, measuring cups, 2 plastic bags.

Method
  1. In a bowl tip 2 cups of Plaster of Paris and ¾ cup of water.
  2. Add some dye to colour it.
  3. Stir the mixture until there is are no lumps and it is smooth.
  4. Divide the mixture in half. Put half in one plastic bag and the other half in the other plastic bag.
  5. Take all the air out of the bag and seal it up.
  6. Put the bag on the bench and after an hour make an observation.
  7. Leave there for at least 24 hours.
  8. Open the bag and see what you can do with it.

Observations
  1. After an hour we picked up the plastic bag and it felt warm and was starting to go hard.
  2. The next day it was very hard and had formed into a shape.

Results
Gypsum (calcium sulfate) is one of the ingredients of Plaster of Paris. Gypsum is found as a mineral rock.
The calcium sulfate is bound together by water which keeps it in its solid form.
When gypsum is heated gently water is lost and the crystals become white powder.
When we add water to this powder, the water recombines with the gypsum.
As this happens the mixture gets hot (an exothermic chemical reaction occurs)
and forms a paste which then sets hard.

A New Animal

For contract we went on a website called buildyourwildself.com and I made a new creature called Dave. After we made the creature we wrote a story about it.

I was hiking in the African plains when suddenly I stumbled across a new animal sleeping on a rock."What!" I whisperer. "How is this possible?" I said. The animal had big strong muscles, hairy              arms and a big floppy bright mane flying in the wind. He had a big strong old                                            grey trunk and big heavy elephant feet. I saw these little fluffy white panda                                              ears. He was covered in a big giant hard tortes shell so no one could hurt                                                    him, a big fat sparkler sharp tail glimmered in the sun. When I've had an good look at this animal I snapped a photo of it and ran away really quick.

Prove it W2T2

Can I use alliterations in my writing?

The bright brainy beaver was making a big brown barricade to keep the brave barking bees back. Along came a huge horrible horse who was hunting for beavers this week. He spotted the small smart snug beaver. Luckily the huge horrible horse just wanted to be friends. They were best friends forever.

Writing Activity W2T2

In our writing group we have been learning to use alliteration. We created a poem using one letter to make up words to use in our poem. Here is mine.

The bright, brainy baboon bounced away on his blue bike
because the brave, big, barking bee bit the baboon on the butt. So the brown, brilliant, big beetle gave the baboon a bat to bash the bee. The blue, beautiful butterfly came over because the barking beetle was barking loudly.

The Coke and Different Flavour Mentos

In reading we did a experiment about coke and mentos. We made a pallet to show our experiment.  Next we wrote the method to show you what we did. Our group used the flavours spearmint, fruit, rainbow and chocolate. We based our experiment on an older one but we just changed some of our ingredients. We used different flavoured mentos.

1st Hockey Game

My legs were as stiff as a rock while I was biking to my mums work rushing to get my gear. My face was as white as snow and I was about to spew up all over the ground. Shaking like an earthquake and nearly falling of my bike. My eyes were getting bigger and wider while I kept checking my watch. "I am HERE!" I yelled. I've arrived at my destination.

Student Blogging Challenge Week 3

Today we learnt all about Creative Commons. On this website you can use images, photos, videos and music on your blog or something else. You can use this website without need to get special permission from people that made the picture. We watched a video on how to use Creative Commons.

Here is the link to the video you can watch it yourself.Creative Commons Video

Here is the link to the website you need to start using.Creative Commons Website.

Here is a image I found on the website and a story I wrote about it.
My face is bright red. "IT'S SO HOT!" I yelled. I don't know why I choose to came to Africa. The animals are cool and all but today is soooooo hot. The night is falling and the temperature is dropping and lots of animals are coming out. I've got to go hunting if I want to survive! Great at least there are some antelopes over there that I can eat. That was a long night here in Africa. Luckily I have a motorbike to go around and see all of the animals. Well now time to pack up. Five minutes later I am now ready. I've got all of my gear on my motorbike and I am on the road again.

Plastic Marble Experiment

Title: Plastic Marble Science

Hypothesis: I predict the rubber marble will just float above the water and move around.

Materiels: Cup, water, marble made of special plastic.

Procedure:
1. Get a cup and fill it up with water.
2. Get the marble and drop the marble into the cup.
3. Wait a few days to see what happens.

Observation:
1st The plastic marble sunk to the bottom of the cup and it stuck to the side of the
cup like it was a magnet.

2nd The plastic marble disappeared because it was camouflaged with the water and then
little air bubbles started to form on the side of the cup.

3rd The marble reacted like a sponge and sucked up some of the water to make the plastic
marble get bigger. Now the marble is invisible.

4th The bubbles have disappeared from the side of the cup.
The marble is see through and really bouncy.

Results: The plastic marble was getting bigger and bigger because the marble was reacting
like a sponge soaking up all the water. The marble was invisible because it was
camouflaging with the water so people would’ve thought that it was just water in the cup.

Adaptation: I would use hot water and see if that made a difference to the plastic marble.

Splat! I landed at the bottom of the hill from the mud run. "Wohoo let's go!" I yelled to Mack from the bottom of the hill. "Ow God it's slippery it's just so easy to slip over. IT IS SO FREEZING!" I shouted to Mack. "I know." he replied. What it's a crayfish, but how can a crayfish get in the mud? It was really fun at the mud run. I loved it.

Ashhurst Trip

                                    Herb Farm
Hey look we're here I said. "Yay!" Hone replied. Bang, the door slammed shut. "Let's go!" I yelled. Hey, how come there are no herbs here I wondered? We followed Miss Hulme. "Hey William, come sit next to me." I whispered. Why is there lavender on the table we thought. "I think we are making some cream," I said to William. We listened to Jess. 10 minutes later our cream was finished. This looks so cool! "What colour is yours William?" "Peach," he said. We said thank you to Jess.

Cooking at Rutherford

Every Wednesday we go to Rutherford. We walk down there in the morning. One thing I learnt is not to pull the knife towards yourself when you are cutting the potatoes because you can cut yourself like I did.  Some of the easy parts about cooking was putting the potatoes in the oven and cooking them and turning on the oven.  The most difficult part was peeling the potatoes because they have different shapes and curves in them. My favourite part was eating the mashed potato, it was really good.

How to boil and mash potato.

Ingredients Equipment
2 - 4 Potatoes Potato peeler
1 tsp Salt Pot and lid
Water Stove
15g Butter Knife
Little Milk Chopping board
Potato masher

Instructions

  1. Peel the potatoes.
  2. Cut the potatoes into quarters (or smaller if the potato is large)
  3. Put the potatoes into the pot.
  4. Cover the potatoes with water and add the salt
  5. Place the lid on the pot.
  6. Turn the element on to high.
  7. Wait for it to come to the boil and then turn it down to simmer.
  8. Cook for about 15 minutes or when they are soft when you poke a knife into them.
  9. Drain water out of the pot.
  10. If you want to serve them boiled then place the potatoes on a plate.
  11. If you want to eat them mashed then add the butter and milk then mash with a potato masher until there are no lumps and it looks smooth.

Potato Bake

Ingredients Equipment
1 potato per person Potato peeler
1 tsp Salt Pot and lid
Water Stove/oven
¼ of an onion Knife
1  T of oil Chopping board
Cream to ¾ fill dish
Grated cheese to cover

Instructions
  1. Turn the oven on to bake at 200 degrees.
  2. Peel the potatoes.
  3. Slice the potatoes into 5mm slices.
  4. Put the potatoes into the pot.
  5. Cover the potatoes with water and add the salt.
  6. Place the lid on the pot.
  7. Put the pot on the element and turn it on to high.
  8. Wait for it to come to the boil and then turn it down to simmer.
  9. Cook for about 5 to 7 minutes or when they are just soft enough when you poke a knife into them.
  10. While the potatoes are cooking, peel and dice the onion.
  11. Heat the oil in the pan on a medium heat and fry the onion.  (Don’t let it turn brown.
  12. When the potatoes are cooked drain the water out of the pot.
  13. Now put a layer of cooked sliced potatoes in the bottom of the dish.
  14. Sprinkle the onion on next.
  15. Add another layer of potatoes.
  16. Pour over cream so it fills up ½ to ¾ of the dish.
  17. Sprinkle over the grated cheese.
  18. Put it in the oven on the middle rack and cook for approximately 20 minutes or until the potatoes are soft when poked with a knife.
  19. Finally they are ready to eat and enjoy!

⅓ cup flour Stove
1 egg or a little milk Chopping board

  1. Using 1 - 2 potatoes follow our recipe to make mashed potatoes.
  2. When they are cool put them into a bowl.
  3. Add the flour, the egg or milk and then mix to combine them.
  4. Knead the dough until it forms a ball.
  5. Cut the dough ball into quarters.
  6. Sprinkle flour on the bench and take one quarter of dough.
  7. Roll into a snake about 1 ½ cm thick.  Then cut into 1cm pieces.
